Often framed as victims or perpetrators of violence, young people as positive agents of conflict transformation and peacebuilding are frequently overlooked by policy-makers and practitioners in the sector. Since the historic adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security in 2015, meaningful mainstreaming of youth perspectives in the peace and security sphere remains insufficient.
When young people are engaged and included - beyond tokenistic efforts - will we attain more sustainable and significant change?
This September marked 30 years of the United Network of Young (UNOY) Peacebuilders. As #UNOYturns30, there is a compelling story that demands to be heard; that of young people unified in their efforts to build peace in their communities across the world.
This HagueTalks young peace builders from all continents -some of whom have been denied visas to speak at the United Nations and beyond—will share their local experiences as young peacebuilders in diverse conflict settings. Join the dialogue!
- Rafiu Adeniran Lawal, passionate peace advocate and Founder and Executive Director of Building Blocks for Peace Foundation will talk about young people in his home country Nigeria. He will draw from a depth of experience in how he manages to build the resilience of these young people against violent philosophies and promoting sustainable peace.
- Catalina Salazar is a political scientist from Chile, dedicated to working with young people in innovating education processes. Her work with Social Hip Hop NGO illuminates the effective use of hip hop as a vehicle for youth engagement and dialogue in building peace.
- Yazeed Al Jeddawy is a Yemeni youth advocate and project coordinator at Youth Without Borders Organisation in Yemen, where he is deeply involved in youth-led movements and initiatives that illustrate the positive role youth play for change, peace, and development.
