The Friends Association of Museon and Omniversum seeks to enthuse people in Museon and Omniversum. It has been doing so for over 60 years. Partly thanks to income from the Museon Shop, an initiative of the Association, it co-finances many of Museon’s non-subsidised activities. With some 2400 members, the Friends Association is financially healthy and organisationally competent.

The Association
In the early 1950s the association was born after regularly showing documentaries at the film theatre at Museon’s previous location (back then it was called the Museum for Education) at Hemsterhuisstraat. The Union of Cinema Owners (de Bioscoopbond) objected to this public presentation of films, so Museon decided to give private showings only for members.

Increasing members
New developments, especially the advent of television, presented the basis for the private film shows and the gradually declining number of members. To attract more members management activities had to follow a different direction: purposeful initiatives were taken to recruit members and expand member benefits. Membership exploded with the association now counting around 2400 members. The Friends Association is one of the 10 largest museum friends association in the country.

Contribution
In 2012 the Friends Association annual contribution is € 18 for adults and € 12 for young members (up to 18 years).

Volunteers
Of course good policy, competent finances and professional organisation plus many enthusiastic volunteers are needed to properly run such a large association. The association has experienced managers who all work on a voluntary basis. Many volunteers take turns in manning Museon’s shop.

Together with Omniversum
When, about 15 years ago, the Museum of Education moved to its new building on the Stadhouderslaan next to Omniversum and changed its name to Museon, Omniversum’s Friends soon joined with Museon Friends … a symbolic bridge was created that lives on to today.

Donations
Over the years the Friends Association has rendered many services to both institutions. Museon numerous visitors’ sofas, lockers in the hall, a new truck ... all were made available. Recently the Friends Association entered into a cooperative effort to provide Museon with EUR 90,000 to refurbish the permanent exhibition on the first floor.
