Museon’s first director was one of the first travellers to take photographs of Surinam (around 1900). Many are still in Museon’s collection. Thanks to his interest in the former colony it was he who laid the basis for the museum’s cultural anthropology collection, today the fourth of its kind in the Netherlands. Besides Surinam, the collection also shows many beautiful pictures taken in countries such as Indonesia, Tibet and Nepal, and of the Ndbele in South Africa and the Inuit in East Greenland.
