Roman milestones

They were the first milestones ever found in the Netherlands ‘in situ’, exactly where they were erected by the Romans. They all showed travellers the way to the same location. Strange?

These milestones used to stand beside the major highway leading to Forum Hadriani (today’s Voorburg). They are very special because they were the first milestones ever found in the Netherlands ‘in situ’, exactly where they were erected by the Romans. Milestones were used not only to assist travellers, but also as propaganda for the reigning emperor. Every emperor who ordered work to be done on a road had his name carved on the milestones. Out of respect for the emperor’s predecessors, however, the old milestones were left in place. As here, the result could be many milestones in one place. The four emperors commemorated by these stones are Antoninus Pius, Caracalla, Gordianus and Decius. The street on the spot where they were found, by the Oosteinde in Wateringseveld, is now known as “Mijlpaal” (Milestone). Replicas of the milestones have been erected close by, at the junction of the Oosteinde and the Laan van Wateringseveld.
