For people in prehistoric times, flint was an important material for tools. Hammer stones or antler hammers were used to strike flakes from a flint core. These flakes have very sharp edges with which for example hides were cut. Flint was used to make many different tools and weapens like arrowheads, knives and scrapers. Other types of stone, like jasper, were also suitable material for tool-making.Because stone tools were used so much and are usually well preserved, archaeologists have recovered them in large numbers during excavations. Stone tools have been found in a great variety of shapes. Some of the smaller flakes have been worked along the edges with an antler punch, the so-called retouche. This kind of small tools are difficult to hold. To work with them, people in prehistoric times probably hafted the tools in wood. All these small tools probably used to have the same function as our present day pocket knife. They can be used for all sorts of things.
