neanderthalensis: from the Neander valley Neanderthal man was much stockier and stronger than modern man. No wonder: he had far more muscle. With his thickset body he could withstand the cold much better than we can. Like us, he evolved from the descendents of Homo erectus.Neanderthal man lived in Europe and Asia Minor between around 220,000 and 27,000 years ago. That was not an easy time to be a human. It was a struggle to survive. The climate was freezing cold, because it was the time of the ice ages. His body evolved fantastically well to cope with the hardships of the time. From around 40,000 years ago, people like us lived side by side with Neanderthal man. We probably avoided each other like cat and dog. Neanderthal man was far stronger than us, but we were more intelligent. It’s not a good combination. Neanderthal man stayed put,Intelligent people are always pushing forward. We have spread all over the world. Neanderthal man died out 27,000 years ago.
