The collection includes animals that lived in the coldest part of the Pleistocene, such as mammoths, visents and bears - animals that had adapted to the climate that was becoming colder. Early in the Pleistocene the ice ages were not very cold and the warmer periods were warmer than our climate today. Mammals then were used to the high temperatures and included species such as rhinos, deer, horses, several elephant-like species, beavers, bears and hyenas. One of the showpieces is a beautiful lower jaw of a hippopotamus. Much of this collection is exhibited at Museonder in the Hoge Veluwe.
