A mineral is a naturally occurring solid that has a characteristic chemical composition. Minerals can be recognised by their crystalline form, colour, hardness and association with other minerals. A limited number of specific composition and proportion represents the large rock masses on the earth’s crust. These are the rock forming minerals. The collection contains some 4000 objects with roughly some 800 different species.
