The fossils from Scotland and the Orkney Islands are from shale, stratified siltstone and clay sediments which sometimes show sandy intrusions. The Scottish fossils are of the Siluric period, 438 to 408 million years ago. The collection covers in particular jawless fish, a sea scorpion, plant material and a few molluscs. Other fossils from this collection are from the ‘Sandwick Fish Bed’ and the ‘Achanarras Fish Bed’ respectively. They are 386 to 377 million years old, (Mid-Devonian). They are usually found in oil shale that lies between the sandstones of the ‘Middle Old Red Sandstone’. The fossil collection mainly contains beautifully preserved fish species that are more modern than the jawless fish from the Siluric period.
