Jipae, ancestor

How the Asmat celebrate their passage from the world of the living to the spirit world.

The Jipae, who celebrate at the Jipae festival, are the people of the Asmat tribe in south-west Papua who have died in the past year. They celebrate their passage from the world of the living to the spirit world. They visit their former homes, tell their families how they are and reassure them that they can take care of themselves. Then they are driven out of the village into the forest. For good. Their children are given new parents, usually the people who have worn the Jipae costumes during the festival.
